One of my favorite web sites to share with my home buyers is WalkScore.com. If you go to WalkScore’s home page, you will see a very simple interface. It simply asks you to enter any address. Then you click go. WalkScore will generate a google map showing the address you entered at the center and then all the amenities the surrounding neighborhood offers. It will show among other things:
- Parks
- Schools
- Grocery Stores
- Restaurants
- Libraries
- Coffee Shops (very important in Seattle)
- Gyms
You get the idea.
Here is an example using my office as the location:

The site also assigns a number from 1 to 100 to a given neighborhood based on its “walkability” This translates to how many amenities there are in close proximity to the location you entered. Using the site you can contrast and compare different homes you may be considering purchasing.
When a client of mine starts to show particular interest in a home, I like to send them the link already pointing to that specific home. It is a great tool for researching any neighborhood before you buy.
Also, check out WalkScore’s rankings of Seattle Neighborhoods. It is a great tool for getting a feel for different areas and how walk friendly they are.
